SALARY:                $50,000-$60,000

REPORTS TO:       Federal Programs Director, SPED Director, and Executive Director of  

                            Finance and Business Affairs

WORK DAYS:       235 Days - 12 Month Employee 

FLSA STATUS:      Exempt    

 

The students of the Mississippi Achievement School District (mASD) need your talent, expertise, passion and leadership.

 

We are seeking highly motivated and innovative practitioners to join our team at the mASD. Currently the mASD serves approximately 4100 students in Yazoo City and Humphreys County in the Mississippi Delta. As part of the state’s comprehensive transformation effort, the mASD seeks to become the model for sustainable school and district improvement in areas of the state that have experienced chronic and entrenched underperformance. Over time, the mASD intends to develop the highest-performing, competitively compensated, and most revered educator workforce in the state known for providing instructional excellence and producing significant outcomes for ALL students.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Federal Grant Accountant performs the accounting and financial service functions for programs funded by federal grants. These functions include: preparing financial projections and budgets, actual v. budget reporting, reviewing/monitoring of individual grants and transactions for compliance with local, state and federal fund requirements, billing and collections, journal entries, and financial grant reporting including preparation of reports for granting authorities and the district’s annual report. Position may also be required to verify budget proposals for grant applications. The Federal Grant Accountant provides fiscal service and support for both central office departments as well as individual school personnel. The position will also answer inquiries from federal, state and local agencies concerning federal grant information and effectively communicate complex financial issues to employees, administrators, and auditors.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed in this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Essential Functions

  • Assists with preparation and entry of federal grant budget narratives in grant management portals and other manual formats. 
  • Reviews and maintains general ledger accounts and budgets for each federal grant.
  • Prepares necessary journal entries to federal grant general ledger accounts.
  • Performs and documents monthly reconciliation of federal grant general ledger accounts and budgets.
  • Prepares request for reimbursement by general ledger line item from each federal grant on a monthly basis.
  • Reviews and approves documentation of grant expenses, including purchase orders, invoices, check disbursements, and payroll expenses.
  • Reviews federal grant purchases on a daily basis to make sure expenses are in the grant  plan and charged against the appropriate grant and fiscal year.
  • Reviews federal grant payroll expenses on a monthly basis to make sure expenses are in the grant plan and charged against the appropriate grant and fiscal year.
  • Updates federal grant budgets as allocations change and grants carryover to next fiscal year.
  • Maintains constant communication with other federal grant stakeholders with respect to available budget balances for each federal grant.
  • Assists with the following: External audits, records research, and special requests.
  • Assists in the preparation of financial statements and reports.
  • Maintains appropriate backup as it relates to grant reporting and requests for reimbursement.
  • Ensures accounting records are in compliance with federal EDGAR requirements.
  • Creates and manages training relating to fiscal compliance for federal grants.
  • Supports Payroll, Accounts Payable and other finance staff as it relates to federal grants.
  • Seeks and presents all available federal grant opportunities; assist with grant narratives, budgets, and submission procedures. 
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by Executive Director of Finance and Business Affairs

 Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with major in accounting, or closely related field
  • Prior experience in accounting profession.
  • Proficiency in various computer applications including accounting enterprise software, database management software, and spreadsheet/word processing/email applications.
  • Competent in exercising initiative, independent judgment, and discretion in performing duties.
  • Knows importance of confidentiality.
  • Must have good communication skills; be courteous and diplomatic.
  • Works cooperatively with others.
